AI IN THE DESIGN AND USE OF LEARNING PLATFORMS

CanopyLAB and AAU is developing a research project on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the enhancement and use of the CanopyLAB learning platform. At the moment two initial features have been released in beta version: Automatic meta-tagging of all content (BETA) and Exercise recommendations (BETA). The project is going to explore the use of the two functions in a natural setting: 1. How are the system affording changes in use-practices, and how are teachers and HR consultants enacting the new features. 2.  What kind of ethical issues can be identified, an example of this could be gender bias in building algorithms, and the extent to which the NLP algorithm tags male and female voices with the same accuracy. The question of gender would also have to reflect on identity policy issues on bi-polar and trans-gender, and especially how to address the semantics of these issues. Also an eventual North-South bias might be tested in relation to the BSU-3 Gulu University project within Building Stronger Universities.
